Amanda Gillies (born 15 August 1976) is a New Zealand journalist and presenter. She is best known for co-hosting Newshub’s early morning program, The AM Show (now AM).

The TV journalist became one of the hosts of The AM Show in 2017. She has had several experiences, including flying over erupting volcanoes, being trapped by cyclones, and coming face to face with murders.

Career

Amanda Gillies started as a reporter for The Gisborne Herald and moved to TV3 in 2001. She worked as an Australia correspondent for 3 News. Her coverage of the Victoria Bushfires won a Qantas Film and TV Award for Best News Reporting in 2009.

The presenter worked at Newshub’s early morning programme, The AM Show. After five years, she signed off at the end of 2021. She has worked across 3News, Campbell Live, Story, 3rd Degree, 60 Minutes and Nightline.

Gillies celebrated working at Three (now Discovery) for 20 years in 2021. She was out in the field for Three for 15 years.

After joining TV3, Amanda wrote and voiced her first story. She covers and breaks stories as a Newshub national correspondent. At 40, she switched from out in the field reporting to co-hosting The AM Show alongside Duncan Garner and Mark Richardson.

Gillies filled in for Heather Du Plessis-Allan on the flagship 7 pm show Story in 2016. She was a reporter for Newshub’s Live at 6 pm in 2016, Campbell Live from 2005 to 2015, and Nightline from 1990 to 2013.

In March 2019, Gillies returned to the field covering the Christchurch mosque shootings. She also covered the 2011 Queensland floods, which killed 33. She has traveled to Europe, the States, Asia, Palau, and the Pacific Islands.

Gillies has continued to spread awareness of menopause. She did a piece about Hawke’s Bay woman Bronda Smith, who quit her job and almost lost her marriage due to the effects of menopause. She calls for menopause education to be in the school curriculum.

Amanda was a television reporter for 3 News / Newshub from 2001 to 2016 and 60 Minutes in 2011. She was a nominee for Best News Reporting: for 3 News, Mangere Drowning, and Barry Hart stories during the 2012 New Zealand Television Awards. She was a TP McLean Sports Award finalist in 2012 and 2016.

The presenter Amanda won the 2009 New Zealand Television Awards for Best News Reporting: for 3 News, Victoria Bush Fires story. She was a nominee for Best News Reporting: for 3 News, Folole Muliaga story at the 2007 New Zealand Television Awards.

Personal Life

Amanda Gillies tied the knot with Newsroom co-editor Tim Murphy on 18 January 2023. She earlier announced their engagement in December 2021.

After their wedding, Amanda and Tim honeymooned at their bach in Whangamatā on the Coromandel Peninsula. She will continue to use the surname Gillies professionally.

Gillies opened up to NEXT magazine about suffering from endometriosis in 2018. However, she revealed being at peace with not having her own children and felt lucky that her husband has six children from his first marriage.

Amanda was once engaged to broadcaster Greg Boyed, who died of depression in 2018. She dislocated her finger after slipping over at work. She was walking in the studio after the six o’clock news when she fell to the floor. Her cousin, Angus Gillies, is a Newshub producer and author.
