Early Life
Ben Armbruster was born on 10 May 2002 in Herston, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He grew up in Stanthorpe in Southern Downs in Queensland.
Armbruster started training at a young age after his teacher noticed he was good in the water and told his parents. His mother, Shannon, is his number one supporter.
Aside from swimming, Ben played basketball and soccer in the winter months. He studies sports management at Bond University.
Where did Ben Armbruster train?
At age 4, Ben had already started training. Gail Smail was his trainer at the Stanthorpe Pool until he was 18.
After moving to the University of the Sunshine Coast to study sport and exercise science in 2020, he left behind his coach, Gail, after 14 years. He started training with USC’s Spartans swimming team.
Ben followed Chris Mooney to Bond University on the Gold Coast in 2021. He is now training under Kyle Samuelson at Bond. He also does gym work and has sports psychologists.
Armbruster trained a similar amount of time each week while in high school. He missed classes to enter competitions and races around Australia.
Career
Armbruster broke the magic 23-second mark in the 50 freestyle and went under 52 seconds at the 2021 Australian swimming championships on the Gold Coast. He performed a stellar backstroke and butterfly and had a personal best of 24.26 seconds for 50m butterfly.
Talented swimmer Ben Armbruster began his international swimming in 2022 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Ben Armbruster reached the finals of the men’s 50m backstroke at his debut in the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. He finished second at the Australian Swimming Championships, just 0.47 seconds behind Temple.
Armbruster also finished fourth in the men’s 50m freestyle in April 2023. He took out the 50m butterfly and the 100m backstroke earlier.
Ben scored a pair of top-two performances in the prelims of the 2023 Australian Swimming Championships. He finished first in the 100 butterfly(51.96) and second in the 50 freestyle (22.26).
His 100 butterfly marked his first time swimming under 52 seconds, an improvement on his 2022 Australian Championships timing of 52.41.
He won the 50 butterfly (23.05) and the 50 backstroke (25.27) on the first and second day of the 2022 Australian Championships.
Ben Armbruster represented his home country at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July 2022.
Armbruster won gold in the 50m Butterfly, clocking an impressive time of 23.08 seconds, and silver in the 100m Butterfly with a personal best time of 51.69 seconds at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.
The medical staff had ordered Ben out of the pool for almost two months after he suffered a significant rib injury in 2023.
His fitness trainers, coach, and medical staff were uncertain of the cause of his inquiry but believed his explosive technique at the start of his races could be the cause.
When he returned from the injury, they tweaked a few things with Ben’s technique at the start.
