Early Life

Karina Carvalho was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Western Australia. She moved with her family to Perth when she was four. She hails from a Roman Catholic background and went to church every week throughout her childhood.

The Colombo riots her family experienced in 1983 have shaped her. Her family lost their business, which had existed for generations, to the riot. The family had to move from the violence to start a new life in Australia.

Education

Carvalho attended Corpus Christi Catholic College. She graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts with a Broadcast major.

Where has Karina Carvalho worked?

After graduating from the university, Karina flew to the United Kingdom. She landed a job as a producer at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). She produced the program HARDtalk for the broadcaster and traveled on assignment to the USA.

She has held prominent roles at the BBC and ABC and anchored coverages on terrorist attacks, flood emergencies, and bushfires. She also covered the Black Summer in 2019-20.

When she returned to Perth, Karina joined the ABC. She started presenting the ABC’s flagship 7 pm News in Western Australia at 27. She co-hosted ABC News Breakfast in Melbourne with Michael Rowland and presented Queensland’s 7 pm News.

Karina has hosted Evenings on the ABC News Channel since 2018 and switched to present Mornings. She has interviewed Prime Ministers, politicians, authors, and celebrities. She interviewed Bryce Courtenay before his death.

Karina Carvalho told The Australian that she had left the ABC News channel. She has moved to Channel Seven News. She hosted the rolling coverage of the Queen’s death and King Charles’s accession to the throne for the ABC.

The seasoned journalist will present Seven Melbourne’s Afternoon News at 4.00 pm on 5 August. She will co-present weekend editions of Melbourne’s 7NEWS alongside Mike Amor from 10 Saturday. She has also covered stories of those who lost their businesses in the 2011 Queensland floods.

Carvalho is a Multicultural Ambassador for Cricket Australia. She covered the story of a refugee, Khalid Amiri, who escaped the Taliban and has settled in Melbourne on a humanitarian visa. She is a member of the National Film and Sound Archive board.

Personal Life

Karina Carvalho and Terry Sweeney tied the knot on the beach in Karina’s Sri Lanka in January 2015. The couple had dated for less than 12 months before their engagement in September 2014.

After four years of marriage, Karina and Terry Sweeney ended the union. The couple’s ‘high-powered careers’ and ‘time spent apart’ contributed to their breakup. She doesn’t have children but recently froze her eggs.

In 2024, Karina was romantically linked to 3AW sports journalist Sam McClure. She is passionate about the arts – the latest exhibition, ballet, and theatre production.
