Early Life

Sharyn Ghidella was born in 1966 in Babinda, a rural town in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia, to Romey and Cheryl.

As a child, she enjoyed sewing and creating outrageous designs. It was a hobby inspired by her grandmother and her mother, Cheryl. She briefly considered a career as a fashion designer.

Where has Sharyn Ghidella worked?

Ghidella landed her first job in television as a reporter and presenter at North Queensland Television (NQTV) in Cairns. NQTV needed a young journalist two weeks after she had graduated from the University.

She was the producer and presenter of the current affairs program Newsweek. She relocated to Brisbane to join Network Ten’s News team and later moved to the Nine Network.

Ghidella reported for National Nine News at the Nine Network for three years. She also wrote and presented hourly news breaks.

Ghidella began to host Nine’s Daybreak program (renamed to National Nine Early News) in the mid-1990s. She later became a regular substitute host on Today, filling in for presenter Ian Ross or anchor Tracy Grimshaw.

Following Ross’ exit from the show in 2001, Ghidella became a permanent news presenter. She continued to fill in as host for the show. She has worked for Channel 10 in Brisbane as a reporter.

She took over as news presenter on Seven’s Weekend Sunrise in 2008, replacing Talitha Cummins, and held the role until 2010.

In 2013, Ghidella started presenting Seven News Brisbane with Bill McDonald and hosted Today Tonight Queensland until its cancellation in 2014.

After spending seventeen years at Seven News, Sharyn Ghidella announced she was leaving in July 2024. She declined an offer to bid farewell to viewers on air after being fired.

She was axed by Channel 7 because she pulled a higher salary compared to her co-host Max Futcher according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Personal life

Veteran newsreader Sharyn Ghidella is in a relationship with Paul Croll, a freelance cameraman. They have been together for over 36 years and have two sons – Austin and Darcy.

Ghidella welcomed her first son, Austin Braydon Croll, at Sydney’s North Shore Private Hospital on 14 April 2007. He came early, four days before he was due, and weighed 2.65kg. The couple had waited so long to become parents.

The former Today star suffered a hemorrhage at 34 weeks pregnant. At the hospital, the medical experts considered an emergency delivery necessary to save her baby.
