Sofia Levin (born September 1989) is an Australian food critic, journalist, and host. She is best known for founding the travel website Seasoned Traveller. She has been writing about food since 2013 for Broadsheet, Lonely Planet, the Guardian, and the Age.

The Melbourne-based journalist promotes tourism destinations through food. She is an MC and has judged national food competitions. She writes for Good Food, National Geographic Traveller, and SBS Food, among others.

Early Life

Sofia Levin was born in September 1989 in multicultural Melbourne, Australia. Her father, Greg, is an aerial photographer, and her mother, Abby, is a talented swing dancer. She has two brothers, Lucas and Max. 

Levin was raised culturally Jewish in multicultural Melbourne. At 19, after she starred into the unblinking eyes of a decapitated goat at a night market in Morocco, she knew she wanted to be a food and travel journalist. She has visited many cultures and communities through food since that time.

Education

Food Journalist Sofia Levin attended primary and high school in Kew. She studied journalism at Monash University. She has an extensive background in food writing.

Career

Sofia is a seasoned Melbourne-based host and journalist, who’s been writing about food since 2013. She is the face of MasterChef Australia, having started as a judge for the 2024 season.

Sofia launched a website and newsletter, The Seasoned Traveller, in March 2021, where she shares her love for food. She appeared on television shows such as Postcards and The Cook Up with Adam Liaw.

The food journalist is passionate about exploring and celebrating cultural diversity through food. She promotes it through her #EatCuriously movement, encouraging readers to eat foods beyond their comfort zones to learn more about others and their selves. 

Sofia has been writing about food for 15 years and has written for top publications such as The Guardian, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, and SBS Food. She was named celebrity chef Luke Mangan’s Chief Experience Officer and has reviewed restaurants on national radio.

Although Sofia is known for food writing, she owns other businesses. She runs the copywriting business Word Salad and a charitable pin company. She has an Instagram page for her toy poodle, Jinkee. 

Sofia joined the judging panel of MasterChef Australia judges in 2024. She has also starred in many video campaigns – locally and internationally. Some of her TV appearances include The Cook Up with Adam Liaw, Postcards, My Market Kitchen with Mike Reid, and Mark Wiens (Migrationology).

The seasoned journalist has been a guest host on many travel and cooking shows. Season one of MasterChef Australia aired the same year she began writing about food.

Personal Life

Sofia Levin was married to Matt John, a boxing fan, pescatarian, and the owner of Sydney eatery Epic Pizza. Matt proposed to Sofia atop the Pyramid of the Sun during a trip to Mexico in May 2016. She and Matt have parted ways.

Before her engagement, reports linked Sofia romantically to Karl Stefanovic. However, she debunked any speculation surrounding a potential romance and denied reports that “Karl is secretly in love with her.” She is rumoured to be dating hunky wine importer Will Dyer.
