Scotty Stevenson

Stevenson launched a joint role with TVNZ and Spark, leading the coverage of the Rugby World Cup 2019 from Japan. He is on the path to joining the selected few commentators recognised by their voices alone.
After working with Sky Sport, TVNZ, and Spark Sport, Scotty returned to TVNZ to start a role spanning commentary, writing, and presenting. On his TVNZ+ interview show, The Upside, Scotty sits with prominent New Zealanders.

The Journey: Scotty Stevenson’s Growing Interest in Rugby.
The Northlander Scotty Stevenson developed an interest in the national game at a young age. He would play rugby on cold winter mornings as a youth.
He and his mates played for Waipu and then Mid-Western as a kid. He stopped playing at the age of 19 after he sustained shoulder injuries and head knocks.
After he stopped playing, Scotty did coach some school rugby.

Scotty Stevenson completed his high school in the halls of Bream Bay College and Auckland Grammar. He enrolled to study for a Bachelor of Communications at Auckland University of Technology.

The proud Northlander went through several roles before he landed an opportunity at Sky Sports. He honed his craft with the sports channel, as it was his first chance to work in a live sport environment. Former producer Andrea McVeigh gave him his first job at SKY Sport.
Scotty led the Spark Sport’s commentary team for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. While at SKY Sport, he worked as a sports rugby commentator, writer, and presenter of the Documentary Series Local Heroes. He was also an editor of SKY Sport Magazine.
Stevenson landed his first commentary – Wairarapa Bush v Wellington for the Ranfurly Shield in Masterton. He was one of SKY Sport’s commentators for the Rugby World Cup in 2011. He continues to call ITM Cup and Super Rugby matches.
The Northlander is part of the SKY Sport’s match preview and commentary teams. He also hosts Rugby Zone, SKY Sport’s global rugby review show. He continues to grow in ranks in the commentary business.
Scotty received calling duties for the Crusaders’ clash against the British and Irish Lions. He is the commentary mentor for the Alternative Commentary Collective’s Champagne Rugby coverage of this Lions series.
In December 2023, Scotty interviewed Katey Martin. He discussed Bates becoming the first White Ferns player to represent the team 300 times.
Stevenson has written biographies, which he says have been challenging and satisfying. He co-wrote the biographies of Rugby Sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens and The Kiwi Pair – Hamish Bond and Eric Murray. He has contributed to a range of online media outlets.
